The formula
Annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)
For a $60,000 salary and a 40-hour, 52-week schedule, the hourly equivalent is about $28.85. A 37.5-hour schedule produces a different comparison because the total annual hours are lower.
Why this is an equivalent rate
A salary-to-hourly conversion is useful for comparing jobs, raises and schedules. It does not determine whether a worker is legally hourly or salaried, exempt or nonexempt, and it does not by itself determine overtime eligibility.
Comparing offers
When two jobs have different expected weekly hours, converting both salaries using the expected schedule can make the comparison more meaningful. Benefits, paid time off and bonuses still need to be considered separately.
